Krispy Kreme

Part of the Sunday morning ritual is for me to go out and pick up something special for breakfast.

Most times, that’s bagels. Mr. Doobins doesn’t like bagels, so, for him, I either pick up a giant chocolate-chip cookie at the bagel place or go over to Krispy Kreme and pick up a doughnut.

For a long time, he wanted only sprinkle doughnuts. Lately, he has been experimenting. He found the chocolate glazed quite tasty.

This morning, I bought a giant chocolate-chip cookie.

Usually, I’m back home before anyone else gets up. I put on the water for the coffee. I open up the paper, find the comics and put them out on the kitchen table so they will be right there for Sparkle Girl when she comes in.

And, for Doobins, I place his treat on a plate.

After I returned this morning, he was the first up. He stretched out on the couch for a few minutes to ease into the day before calling to me in the kitchen, “I’m ready for a spoonful of Nutella.”

Nutella is his fall-back position when he doesn’t know there are other treats in the house.

“If you come in here, I think you can do better than that,” I said.

He came into the kitchen and saw the cookie on the plate.

“You’re right about one thing!” he said.

He sat down and tucked into the cookie.

A couple of bites in, he said, “I don’t know how to thank you.”

That did the job quite nicely.
